STD.DEV Lighting & Shading

The lighting component from STD.DEV efficiently combines Point, Spot, and Directional Light sources, covering a wide range of realistic lighting scenarios. Advanced techniques such as Image Based Lighting (IBL) and Path Tracing are used for the precise simulation of light reflections and diffuse lighting conditions.

Path Tracing, a form of Ray Tracing, enables particularly realistic and physically correct renderings by accurately simulating light paths.

By using the VSM (Variance Shadow Mapping) method, the engine achieves high-quality shadows, with a particular focus on soft edges and the minimization of artifacts. For fine-tuned lighting details, STD.DEV implements Realtime Ambient Occlusion, which, in combination with Baked AOC Maps and Bent Normals, refines the interaction of light with surfaces.

Through AR Light Estimation, STD.DEV enables the capture of real lighting conditions in order to adaptively feed them into Augmented Reality scenarios. This ensures a coherent integration of digital content into the physical world.
